Low Back Pain Q & A

What are the causes of lower back pain?

Lower back pain has countless possible causes, most related to injury, illness, disease, obesity, inactive lifestyle, arthritis, age, and poor posture. These factors can lead to back problems like:

  • Strains and sprains
  • Muscle spasms and back tension
  • Spinal misalignment
  • Herniated discs
  • Disc bulges
  • Infections
  • Fractures
  • Bone spurs

If you experience any lower back pain, it is important to visit Symmetria Integrative Medical for treatment.

What is spinal decompression therapy?

Spinal decompression therapy is a technique designed to relieve pressure on your spinal discs, which are the gel-like cushions between your spinal bones.

The Symmetria Integrative Medical team performs decompression therapy using a decompression table. To perform the therapy, the team straps you onto the table, which decompresses your spine by physically moving.

Not only does this stretch the muscle, but it also provides relief by creating negative pressure inside the spinal discs, which makes them retract or reposition, and prompting the body to release healing nutrients to the spinal discs.

To improve their accuracy, spinal decompression tables feature sensors that detect where your muscles are resisting so that the machine can target that area. The team also uses MyoVisionsEMG ScanVision® devices to measure back pain.

Is spinal decompression therapy right for me?

Spinal decompression is an excellent nonsurgical solution for many patients. Spinal decompression therapy may provide you with pain relief if you suffer from any of the following lower back issues:

  • Sciatica
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Diseased or injured spinal roots

Spinal decompression may not be right for you if your lower back pain originates with:

  • Pregnancy
  • Osteoporosis
  • Broken vertebrae
  • Spinal tumors or metastasized cancer

It also may not work for you if you’ve had spinal fusion surgery, or if you have spinal implants like artificial discs.

When should I seek treatment for my lower back pain?

If you aren’t sure whether or not your lower back pain requires treatment, ask yourself if your back pain:

  • Has lasted for over a week
  • Is accompanied by swelling or redness on the back
  • Spreads down both or one leg, especially past the knee
  • Makes one or both of your legs tingle, numb, or weak
  • Worsens when you lie down
  • Is intense

You should also reach out for help if lower back pain is keeping you from work or other regular activities.
