Regenerative Therapy Q & A

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine is a medical treatment that qualified medical professionals use to help your body repair itself. Regenerative medicine uses mesenchymal stem cells and specialized fluids like PRP (platelet-rich plasma).

Mesenchymal stem cells are harvested from donor cord tissue after the live birth of full-term, healthy babies. Before harvesting the tissue, the babies are pre-screened and pre-approved for the process, which does not hurt them.

Research shows that mesenchymal stem cells can potentially regenerate diseased or damaged tissue, including entire organs, and normalize congenital deformities.

What are PRP injections?

PRP injections, or platelet-rich plasma injections, speed up the body’s healing process. They do this because they contain a concentrated form of your own platelets, which are a component of your blood that contain growth factors, proteins that facilitate body repair.

PRP injections have the potential to speed up healing from:

  • Surgery
  • Acute injuries
  • Tendon injuries
  • Osteoarthritis

The Symmetria Integrative Medical team makes platelet-rich plasma by drawing a small amount of your own blood from your arm, then separating its components and isolating the platelets.

After the team isolates the platelets, they increase their concentration via a process called centrifugation and combine the highly concentrated platelets with the rest of your liquid blood, or plasma.

To treat your injury or pain, the team then injects the PRP solution directly into the affected area. Even though you may not notice your results immediately, you may find during the ensuing weeks and months that you’re healing quicker than normal.

Do PRP injections hurt?

You may experience some discomfort during the process of PRP injection. The procedure, however, only takes about an hour from start to finish, and you can usually resume your regular activities afterward.

Because PRP comes from your own body, PRP injections are extremely safe, and it’s unlikely that you’ll experience complications. However, as with all injections, it does carry some risks, including:

  • Tissue damage
  • Nerve damage
  • Infection
  • Pain at the injection site

After your injection, your pain may increase for a week or two before it begins to heal. If you have any anxieties about potential complications, share your concerns with the team, so they can put your mind at ease.
